lascelles perkins was one of the first stars of the jamaican music scene. studio one’s leading balladeer and one of the most underrated singers from that time. lascelles perkins sang sentimental ballads and he scored massive local hits for coxsone dodd’s studio one label. songs like “lonely moments” and “together forever” other big hits followed “the mighty organ” song as a duet with hortense ellis, alton ellis’ sister, “destiny” and a whole catalogue of standards or foreign songs as they were called. lascelles could sing any song, make it seem effortless and at the same time address it in his own unique style.

since it was very hard to grow musically or in any other artistic way in regard of our surroundings, we always had a need to find inspiration somewhere else. things that were a given for some were far fetched and hard to come by. a distant dream. that s why we decided to go forward. a final push to reach the place we wanted to be. a place we can call home.

leading on perfectly from secludeds debut album release, reeko & jonas kopp have provided their own interpretations of tracks selected from the album. reeko has created a full on, pounding version of >feeling< while jonas kopp has offered up two mixes, one peak time techno jam, the other a beatless remix by his manzel alias. also, secluded has put a cherry on top with his flashback remix of >distant<, rounding off another quality release.

ynk’s 2nd ep for polytone is much more than a continuation of his earlier records on polytone and tenderpark. instead, the young artist wants his new ep to be seen as an autonomous work which draws on a multitude of different materials. this leads to a very fluid texture of samples, synths and drum machines and a very detailed structure at first sight - however, all elements fit into each other very nicely and make way for the bigger picture if you take a step back.

uk techno stalwart ben sims adopts his ron bacardi alias for an outing on bass culture records, bringing with him three varying slices of 4x4-based music. d’julz has a deep penchant for bass and funk, and this is evident throughout the ep. we get off to a rugged start with ‘rock your body’, a deliciously dark slice of grumbling techno. intertwined with the morose bassline is a mysterious, tribal-esque female vocal, warped and twisted to add a primal feel to the track. on the flip, bacardi puts his a different hat on giving us ‘first effort’ a vivacious funk-laced hybrid, which teases you spitting out intermittent trumpets and other such live instruments. finally, ‘the money/dub’ goes straight into disco territory with that oh-so-familiar entrancing rhythm that will keep you fixed to its beat from start to finish. that filtered wah-wah guitar is impossible to resist, especially when combined with such crisp percussion. sheer quality from monsieur bacardi…

anubis ep wants to bring back metaphorically that solid foundation of reality through music and feeling. the first track, anubis, like the egyptian god, provides a safe passage to another world through its dub chords, dark techno berlinish synths and hidden messages in the voices scatters on the whole track. the remix, made by canadian based artist hooll, has a more minimal and deep dub approach completing perfectly the other side of the journey. finally the last track, thoth, represents a mediating energy between dark and light with raw low ends and groovy percussions creating a wormhole like journey for the listener.

the idea that france once had a genius and let him go to california where he was more welcome and appreciated than in paris is, in the digital area, a trivial issue. every single web entrepreneur heads towards the silicon valley to develop his ideas. during the 70’s, this was less ordinary. back then, it was another area, music, which witnessed the departure of a very talented guy for the united states, a country that quickly understood he was a star. marc cerrone, a trained drummer and disco phenomenon who sold more albums than many other artists put together, saw his career magnified by america but also slightly twisted by france which quickly reduced him to a style, disco music, without trying to understand who he was and how relevant his talent was. his path went through two phases, two complementary moves.

one of the most respected producers in the underground, anaxander, contributes two beautiful pieces of original music, and has one of them reworked by deep house heavy hitter, the mighty amir alexander. lost my soul (in yours) is twisted little number, with dual synth riffs echoing off each other for maximum effect. a question about you uses jazzy chords and flutes over its undeniable bassline to retain some soulful flavoring, but amir strips all of that away on his interpretation, preffering instead to let the acid and the warehouse vibes have their way, taking things right into a 6am rave nightmare. this is absolute must-have piece of wax!

after 3 years of hosting and co-hosting several successful events the guys at vbx decided to expand their musical horizon in the form of a vinyl only label. none other then vbx mainstay ferro is responsible for the kickoff ep. >time will tell< perfectly showcases the various facets of ferro s musical persona. the a-side track >time< is the most introspective and hypnotic on this ep. the background atmospherics swell and fall, while the rhythm steadily chugs forward, slowly making you lose your sense of time. the growling sounds and heavy kicks that form the backbone of >mushin< make this track the most straightforward club banger of the bunch, while still maintaining an edge through the intricate sampling of armand van helden s >the funk phenomenon<. ferro rounds up the ep with >opening the seven<, nagging vocal snips serve as a melodic hook while distorted rhythmical elements give the track its typical ferro sense of swing.

two tracks found their way on the b side and their flavour is quite different. escape is a pure deep house gem, and a clear indication of arapus soulful influence. extremely danceable and super uplifting, this track brings the summer back. wasting on the other hand is dark and has a dirty broken tech groove. this track may seem toolish but it s a monster when it hits.

arranged by godin, taurelle the original trakc was written by georg christian lehms, composed by bach and adapted from bach cantata widerstehe doch der sünde bwv 54. here bach’s church cantata for solo voice meets languid gainsbourg & birkin, albeit in german, with exquisite choir and strings. nicolas godin says i wanted songs on contrepoint, to act like poles that hold up a tent. this piece starts with a very strange chord, which was avant garde for its day. bach’s scores are outside any rules, which i wanted to exploit. i also wanted the lyric in german because no one expects german to sound sexy and cool. the main singer is gordon tracks. the other voice is dorothée de koon, a friend of a french artist i know - they both have german blood.
